Apple is developing a touchscreen MacBook Pro

Apple is preparing to release the first touchscreen MacBook Pro model. According to Bloomberg and journalist Mark Gurman, the company plans to unveil the device in late 2026 or early 2027 – at the same time as the new M6 processor.

What we know about the touchscreen MacBook Pro

According to Gurman, the laptop will get an OLED display, the same technology used in the iPhone and iPad Pro. This will be the first time Apple will use OLED in the MacBook series.

The company’s engineers are developing reinforced hinges and screen unit to eliminate the typical problem with touchscreen laptops — mobility or springiness when touched. It’s also expected to do away with the “bangs” at the top of the screen, replacing them with a circular camera cutout reminiscent of the iPhone’s Dynamic Island.

The touchscreen version will be a premium upgrade to the regular MacBook Pro without a touchscreen. The current 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 chip costs $1999, but the touchscreen version will cost a few hundred dollars more.

Why it matters

Apple founder Steve Jobs previously opposed vertical touchscreens, believing them to be uncomfortable for long periods of time. The company stuck to that stance for more than a decade. It wasn’t until 2023 that Apple engineers began actively exploring the possibility of a touch-enabled MacBook.

Apple’s engineers have been actively exploring the possibility of a touch-enabled MacBook.

In 2024, Apple’s vice president of iPad and Mac marketing, Tom Boger, assured that there were no plans for a touchscreen laptop. But a new report from Bloomberg shows: the concept has changed.

Apple already tried to merge keyboard and touch controls in 2016, releasing the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. However, the Touch Bar didn’t become popular and was discontinued in 2023.

Most laptop makers have long offered touch models, so Apple is actually catching up with the market – as it did with the introduction of artificial intelligence in its products.
