Sber is preparing to release a new payment method

Sberbank is resuming development of a way to make payments through terminals using biometric data. Although such technology was tested a decade ago, the company has now decided to return to its development.
The focus is on palm print identification. Sber officials say the main problem is the need to create a new database of fingerprints adapted to modern technology. The key advantage of this authentication method is that the bank retains full control over the data without handing it over to government agencies. Moreover, palm print identification can be integrated into existing terminals that support “pay with a smile.”

It’s worth noting that Sberbank already attempted to introduce biometric identification based on the vein pattern in the palm of your hand 10 years ago.

“Customer identification is implemented on principles comparable to ‘smile payment’ – unambiguous identification by image without special IR sensors or separate devices,” explained Kirill Tsarev, First Deputy Chairman of Sberbank’s Management Board.
Sber plans to introduce a solution that will be immediately ready for mass use.
