Switch 2 has 2.2 million applications – Nintendo can’t keep up with demand

Nintendo says there’s record interest in its new Switch 2 console, with around 2.2 million applications submitted in Japan for the pre-order lottery about 2.2 million, far exceeding the volume of available units on the launch date June 5.

Despite an eight-year wait for the new model, Nintendo admitted that it didn’t expect such massive demand. The winners of the lottery will be announced on April 24, with the remaining entrants given the opportunity to enter a second round of drawings. However, even a second draw will not fully meet demand.

The company said it is reinforcing production capacity to reduce shortages and continue to produce and ship Switch 2 “in significant volumes.” Pre-orders will also open at other retailers on April 24.

Nintendo has faced a number of challenges in launching pre-orders. In the US, the launch was delayed due to trade duties imposed by Donald Trump’s administration and pricing uncertainty. Now the company has confirmed: pre-orders in the US and Canada will start on April 24, and the Switch 2 will be priced at $450. It has been noted that at that price, Nintendo could be making a loss.

The shortage of consoles and high demand create risks of resellers. Similar situations have previously occurred with the PS5 and Xbox Series X, which sold on third-party platforms for $1500-$1700, as well as with retro models of the SNES Mini and NES Mini, which cost significantly more than the recommended price on the secondary market.
