Musk’s Boring Co. has violated environmental regulations nearly 800 times

Nevada regulators say the Boring Company, which specializes in tunneling and infrastructure development, repeatedly violated state environmental requirements even after agreeing to comply with the laws.
According to a ProPublica report, Boring Company, which is expanding a network of tunnels under Las Vegas, is accused of nearly 800 violations. Of those, about 100 occurred after the company signed an agreement with state regulators in 2022 committing it to comply with state law.

The alleged violations include excavating without required permits, discharging untreated water onto city streets, failing to oppose fencing, and throwing dirt from construction sites onto nearby roads.
The Boring Company could have been fined more than $3 million. However, regulators decided to combine some of the violations, reducing the total fine to $242,800.
The Nevada Department of Environmental Protection said the reduced fine amount serves as “a reasonable penalty that should, at the same time, serve as a deterrent to prevent future violations.”
The plan is to expand the Las Vegas tunnel system from the current few miles to 68 miles, with 104 stations connecting.
But this development also raises new challenges. In particular, work on the Boring Company’s Las Vegas Airport Tunnel was halted in September after a worker was injured when he was pinned between two 4,000-foot pipes, causing a crush injury.
