Canalys: global smartphone sales to grow 7% in 2024

After two years of decline, global smartphone sales have reached 1.22 billion units, showing a 7% increase from 2023. That’s according to a new report from analyst firm Canalys.

Apple and Samsung share the lead

Apple and Samsung took the lead with market shares of 18% each. Xiaomi placed third with a 14% share, followed by Transsion with 9%, Oppo and vivo with 8%, Honor and Lenovo with 5% and Huawei and Realme with 4% each.

It’s curious that analytics companies including Canalys combine Transsion’s brands but count BBK’s brands (including Oppo, vivo and Realme) separately. If you combine them, BBK comes out on top with a 20% share, ahead of both Apple and Samsung.

Main Growth Drivers

Apple’s success is attributed to growth in emerging markets and solid sales in North America and Europe. Xiaomi strengthened its position due to strong demand in China and active expansion into new markets.

In 2024, Apple sold 225.9 million iPhones (down 1%), Samsung sold 222.9 million Galaxy (also down 1%), and Xiaomi increased sales by 15% to 168.6 million units. Transsion was also up 15%, selling 106.7 million smartphones, and Oppo (including OnePlus) posted a 3% increase, selling 103.6 million devices.

Regional Dynamics

Smartphone sales in China grew 4% year-on-year in 2023. North America grew 1% and Europe grew 3%.

Fourth Quarter Results

In the final quarter of 2024, Apple maintained its lead with 77.1 million shipments and a 23% market share (down 1%). Samsung came in second with 51.9 million units and 16% of the market (down 3%). Xiaomi shipped 42.7 million smartphones (up 5%) and maintained 13% market share. Transsion and vivo each took 8% of the market with results of 27.2 million and 26.4 million devices, respectively.
