Former NSA head joins OpenAI’s board of directors

OpenAI has announced the appointment of Paul M. Naxane, a former U.S. Army general and former head of the National Security Agency (NSA), to the company’s board of directors. Naxane will serve on the security team led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Paul Naxane, appointed as NSA director by former President Donald Trump, led the agency from 2018 until February of this year. Before leaving the NSA, Naxane wrote an op-ed supporting the extension of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, the surveillance program reauthorized by Congress in April.

At the time, Naxane was the first person to be appointed director of the NSA.

Role in OpenAI

OpenAI said Naxane will join the Safety and Security Committee, created in May and chaired by Sam Altman, “as a first priority.” Naxane will also contribute to OpenAI’s efforts to better understand how AI can be used to strengthen cybersecurity by rapidly detecting and responding to cyber threats.
