ByteDance and Broadcom discuss the development of an advanced AI chip

ByteDance Ltd. the parent company of TikTok, and Broadcom Inc. are in talks about a possible collaboration to develop a processor for artificial intelligence (AI). According to a source familiar with the discussions, they are talking about creating a specialized chip using 5-nanometer technology. No agreement has been reached between the companies at this point. Broadcom already supplies ByteDance with a previous-generation AI processor at 7 nanometers for use in the company’s data centers.

The anticipated chip would comply with U.S. trade restrictions on China, Reuters reported, citing anonymous sources. The existing business relationship between ByteDance and Broadcom is mainly for server and networking equipment, and Broadcom has already mentioned ByteDance in its press releases as one of its customers.

In March, Broadcom told investors that it had added a new customer to its consumer AI gas pedal business and would begin shipping that company’s products in the coming months, without specifying the customer’s name.

If the companies reach an agreement, production of the specialized chip will take place at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) factories, Reuters reported. The collaboration between TikTok’s owner and the two global semiconductor makers looks unusual given Washington’s efforts to curb China’s chip-making ambitions through broad manufacturing and export restrictions.
