Volkswagen is preparing the return of the Touareg in the form of an electric car

It was reported in early August that after 25 years on the assembly line, production of the Volkswagen Touareg crossover will end. However, according to the German publication Automobilwoche, the model will not disappear completely: by the end of the decade, the brand will present it in a new format — as an all-electric ID Touareg.
New architecture and partnership with Rivian
While traditional versions of the Touareg shared a platform with the Porsche Cayenne, the electric version will be built on the new SSP architecture, which is being developed in collaboration with the American company Rivian.
Rivian will provide a range of technology solutions, including advanced software and a suite of systems for future Volkswagen electric vehicles. The electric Cayenne, meanwhile, will use a different platform — PPE, which is already undergoing testing.

Plans for the ID lineup
The SSP platform was originally to debut with a battery-powered version of the T-Roc crossover and then — an electric Golf. However, their launch has been pushed back to the beginning of the next decade.
At the same time, the launch has been postponed to the beginning of the next decade.
In 2026, Volkswagen will focus on expanding the more affordable segment: there will be budget models ID. Polo and ID. Cross, and later — an even more compact and mass-market electric car, hinted at by the concept ID. Every1.
Production changes
It became known earlier that the concern will move part of the production of electric cars to Spain in order to reduce costs. This decision will also affect future models of the ID family, including the new mass-market hatchbacks and crossovers.
