JAC Yiwei is the world’s first mass-produced electric car with a lithium-free battery

Automaker JAC has unveiled its latest production electric car, which differs from other models by using sodium-ion technology instead of lithium technology. The new car, called the Yiwei, not only offers impressive performance but also an affordable price, ranging from $12,600 ($1.1 million) to $17,900 ($1.6 million) depending on configuration.
The new car is also available in a range of models, from $12,600 ($1.1 million) to $17,900 ($1.6 million).
The Yiwei, which seats four passengers, is equipped with the NaCR32140 battery developed by HiNa Battery. This battery has cylindrical sodium-ion cells and a capacity of 25 kWh with an energy density of 120Wh/kg. It has a mass of approximately 210 kg and a claimed range of 252 kilometers. The Yiwei can be charged using 3C and 4C charging stations.
The sodium-ion battery technology although has lower energy density compared to lithium batteries, but it is compensated by lower production cost, superior range and high cold weather resistance.
Deliveries of the JAC Yiwei electric car will begin in January.
