BMW is discontinuing production of the X4

When BMW launched the second-generation X2 last year, the new crossover coupe was significantly larger than its predecessor. That raised questions about the X4’s future in the company’s increasingly saturated lineup. Now we have an answer – the X4 is disappearing from the market.

And now we have an answer – the X4 is disappearing from the market.

Reasons for the demise of the BMW X4

BMW explains that there is no longer room in the lineup for the X4, as the X2 has grown significantly in size. The price gap between these models has narrowed significantly, and now it doesn’t make sense to keep both. For those looking for a larger, more luxurious coupe-style SUV, BMW offers the X6. For those who want something in between after the departure of the X4, the German brand recommends the new X3. Unlike the X2, which is based on a front-wheel-drive platform with four-cylinder engines, BMW’s best-selling SUV in 2023 continues to use a rear-wheel-drive platform with a six-cylinder engine in a new M50 version.

The X3 is a new version of the M50.

When will BMW cease production of the BMW X4?”

BMW doesn’t specify exactly when it will stop production of the X4. However, with deliveries of the redesigned X3 set to begin later this year, it’s logical to assume that the X4 won’t be on the market for long. Most likely, the model won’t survive 2025. While the X2 isn’t a full-fledged replacement, buyers in this segment are unlikely to notice the difference between front- and rear-wheel drive. It’s unusual to hear about an SUV going out of production, but in the case of the X4, it doesn’t cause much sadness.

Future: the BMW iX4

Although the X4 with internal combustion engines is becoming a thing of the past, it may have an indirect successor. BMWBLOG reports that an all-electric iX4 will arrive around 2027 on the Neue Klasse platform. The Munich-based brand plans to launch at least six electric cars on the new platform by 2028. One of them could be the iX4, along with the already confirmed iX3 crossover, due out in 2025, and the i3 sedan, which is expected in 2026.

The iX4 will be the first of its kind.
