TikTok launches new features to promote songwriters

TikTok has begun testing tools that will allow songwriters to better highlight their work within the platform. As part of the beta, the service is introducing a special “Songwriter” tag and a new profile tab where songwriters will be able to showcase their musical works. This should help them promote themselves and attract new listeners.

So far, only a limited number of songwriters have access to the program. The rest of the program is on a waiting list.

TikTok says it surveyed more than 870 songwriters and conducted in-depth interviews to understand their needs for self-presentation and monetization through social media. In addition, independent research found that more than half of the songwriters surveyed are already using TikTok for promotion.

A spokesperson for TikTok said the main goal of the new features is to create tools that allow songwriters to share stories, talk about their work and find an audience. These features add to the existing features for artists, and now songwriters will be able to promote their music on the same level as artists.

It’s worth noting that Spotify has long offered similar features for songwriters. And last year, Tidal went a step further by offering a tool for songwriters to track royalties and manage the rights to their work.

Although TikTok shut down its music streaming service TikTok Music last year, the platform itself still plays a key role in discovering new music and promoting artists. Earlier this year, TikTok introduced TikTok for Artists, a tool that allows artists to track the performance of their campaigns and tracks.
