A video has surfaced on Reddit that captures the moment a green line appeared on the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE’s display during the One UI 6.1 firmware update. The incident occurred while installing the April 2024 update, and has once again raised the issue of green lines on Samsung’s OLED displays.
The issue of green lines is not the first time owners of smartphones with AMOLED screens, including the Galaxy S21 and S22 models, have been bothered by the problem. In this case, the S21 FE owner purposely delayed installing the update for a year, knowing of the numerous complaints about display crashes. However, when upgrading to One UI 6.1 at the 60% mark, a thin green line appeared on the screen, which became noticeably thicker as the installation progressed.
The published video shows the update process going smoothly until a defect appears on the screen. The author of the video also shared photos that clearly show a green streak running vertically across the screen. Such a defect often renders a device unusable.
After contacting Samsung’s service center, the user was denied a free display replacement. The restoration of the device was estimated at ₹17,000 (roughly $200), which is almost half the current cost of the smartphone. In most cases, free repairs under warranty are only available for the first year after purchase, and problems on older devices are not officially covered.
While in some cases users did get a free screen replacement after contacting Samsung’s support team, the situation remains difficult for most. Green lines remain an issue, and Samsung device owners are advised to be cautious about installing updates and wait a few weeks after they’re released to make sure there are no critical bugs.
