Microsoft will close Skype in May: the end of an era
Users move to Teams
Microsoft has officially announced that Skype will cease operations in May 2025. Users will be prompted to migrate to Teams, and a notice to that effect has already appeared in the latest version of Skype for Windows.
Microsoft has announced that Skype will be discontinued.
After 21 years of existence, the service will finally give way to Teams, which the company has been actively developing since 2017.
How Microsoft tried to save Skype
Skype was launched in 2003, and in 2011 it was bought by Microsoft. Despite numerous updates and integration into Windows 10 and Windows 11, the service was never able to compete with FaceTime, Zoom, and Google Meet.
The company has changed its strategy several times:
- In 2015 it tried to build Skype into Windows 10, but abandoned the idea 9 months later.
- In 2016 introduced a UWP version of Skype, but soon returned to the Win32 app.
- In 2017 launched Teams, a work and communication platform based on Skype’s technologies.
What’s next?
Beginning in May 2025, Skype users will see a notification to switch to Teams Free.
Microsoft has yet to make an official comment, but one thing is clear – Skype’s time has come to an end.
