ICQ messenger will close next month

One of the pioneering messaging services, ICQ, which once competed with AIM and Yahoo Messenger, will cease operations on June 26.

ICQ was bought by AOL in 1998 and Mail.Ru Group (now VK) in 2010. Since the messenger is still owned by VK, the company is offering to switch to VK Messenger for communicating with friends and VK WorkSpace for communicating with colleagues at work starting June 26.

At the height of its popularity, ICQ had more than 100 million accounts. According to Wikipedia, ICQ still has about 11 million monthly active users in 2022.
