Google is preparing a major update to the Gemini app and working on a native client for macOS

Google is gradually improving the Gemini app for Android to enhance usability, but the current version still doesn’t bring out the full capabilities of the model. The company recognizes that the interface of the mobile and web versions needs to be redesigned, and it’s already working on it.

In response to a report in X that the Gemini frontend is inferior to the ChatGPT app, Google AI Studio and Gemini API product manager Logan Kilpatrick confirmed: the company is now making a “major investment” in the Gemini App UX 2.0 user interface.

According to a report in X that the Gemini frontend is inferior to the ChatGPT app.

Kilpatrick said the updated interface should allow the service to better showcase the model’s features and make it easier to access the capabilities you need on a daily basis. He also said Google is developing a native Gemini app for macOS.

ChatGPT already has desktop versions for Windows and macOS, providing easier access and advanced features including integration with Notion, Terminal and Apple Notes. Gemini, on the other hand, can only be opened through a browser, making it less flexible. For example, uploading multiple files to ChatGPT through the native app is noticeably faster, whereas Gemini requires a browser, making the process more complicated.

As AI models gain agent-based capabilities, local apps are becoming more important: they provide a closer experience with files on the device and integration with installed programs. Judging by current announcements, the Gemini team recognizes this and is already working on a native client for macOS. No release date has been announced yet, but the frequency of Gemini updates suggests a release in the foreseeable future.

Google builds mobile app for AI Studio

Google is also developing a separate Google AI Studio app for iOS and Android under the working title Build Anything.

Amar Reshi, head of product and design at Google AI Studio, said it could be a while before the app is released. However, users active in AI Studio will be able to continue working on projects and “coding sessions” in a mobile format.
