Apple released tvOS 18.5 and HomePod updates: nothing new, but it’s important

Apple has released the tvOS 18.5 update – and as expected, it didn’t bring any new features, but it did improve the stability and reliability of the system. Along with tvOS, the HomePod software was also updated. Both updates received the same build number – 22L572.
tvOS has long stopped getting major updates between major releases, and this update was another example of that approach. It doesn’t look exciting, but it’s the kind of quiet updates that keep your Apple TV running smoothly and seamlessly, especially if you’re actively using the features added in previous versions.
TvOS has a long history of not getting major updates between major releases, and this update is another example of that approach.
What was in the last update
Although the 18.5 release doesn’t add any new features, the previous version of tvOS 18.4 was noticeably richer. It introduced support for:
- the Matter standard for robotic vacuum cleaners – now they can be more easily integrated into a smart home system;
- lossless-audio and ultra-low-latency for AirPods Max headphones, which is especially important for fans of high-quality audio and lag-free content viewing.
So even if the update seems “barebones” now, it ensures that all of these features work consistently in real-world usage scenarios.
