OpenAI on Monday said it is supporting a new consortium, NextGenAI, that will focus on supporting AI-enabled research at leading universities.

NextGenAI, whose 15 founding academic partners include Harvard, Oxford University and MIT, will be funded by $50 million in research grants, computational funding and API access from OpenAI, the company said. Students, faculty and researchers will be eligible for the awards, which will be made over the coming months.

“This initiative is designed not only to fuel the next generation of discovery, but also to prepare the next generation to shape the future of AI,” OpenAI wrote on its blog. “NextGenAI is designed to support scientists looking for a cure, scientists discovering new ideas, and students mastering AI for the future of the world […] As we learn more about this initiative, we will explore opportunities to expand its reach and impact.”

We’ll be exploring opportunities to expand its reach and impact.

NextGenAI can help advance important work with AI. But OpenAI isn’t exactly neutral in the AI field – the startup apparently hopes that researchers, educators, and students will become accustomed to its AI offerings at the expense of competitors’ tools, including open source alternatives.

OpenAI is a startup that has been working on a number of AI projects for years.
