Samsung Project Moohan: freshly leaked specs and renders

If rumors earlier this month are to be believed, Samsung will unveil its virtual reality headset, codenamed Project Moohan, as early as October 21. So it’s no surprise that more details about the device, which will apparently be called the Galaxy XR, have started to appear online. A new leak has published images that look like official renders, and also reveals key specs.
Galaxy XR will feature two micro-LED displays with 4K resolution and a pixel density of 4,032 ppi. Together, the screens will provide about 29 million pixels — more than Apple’s Vision Pro (23 million) or Meta* Quest 3.

The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip is responsible for the performance. A set of sensors and cameras will allow the headset to track the user’s hand movements, eye movements and surroundings. There are four sensors on the front panel, two more — on the bottom, they are responsible for hand tracking. There’s also a proximity sensor near the forehead that helps detect physical boundaries — walls, furniture and other obstacles, increasing safety.

There are four cameras inside for gaze tracking, and built-in artificial intelligence enhances their accuracy.
Multiple microphones will be able to recognize the wearer’s voice and separate it from background sounds, as well as distinguish other people’s voices to improve speech quality.
When it comes to design, the device is visually almost identical to the model Samsung showed off back in January. The headset has soft cushions inside for comfort, and the headband can be adjusted via a wheel on the back.

The power and volume buttons are on top, with the power cable running along the left side and the touch-sensitive trackpad on the right. You’ll get about 2 hours of battery life with normal use and up to 2.5 hours of video playback.

The weight of the device is — 545 grams. That’s slightly lighter than the Apple Vision Pro (600-650 grams), but slightly heavier than the Meta* Quest 3 (by about 30 grams).
The headset will come with a pair of controllers that will provide precise tracking of hand movements in virtual space, such as when playing games. The controllers will, of course, be vibration-responsive.

In addition, images of the One UI XR — likely to be the name of the headset’s proprietary shell have surfaced online.

Although there’s no official release date yet, most sources point to October 21. According to the leaks, the device will be priced at least $1,800.
