In the near future, Samsung will introduce a new feature for its Galaxy Watch smartwatch and other wearable devices — an early detection system for potentially fatal heart disease.

Samsung plans to use a special algorithm in its smart watches to recognize the initial signs of said disease. The development, based on analyzing ECGs using neural networks, has already received approval from South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).

The technology was developed by Korean startup Medical AI. The algorithm has been trained based on clinical ECG data. The AiTiA LVSD-1L app, available on Google Play, is used to process the information obtained from the smartwatch.

The exact date when the feature will appear in the Galaxy Watch has not yet been announced.

Samsung has also partnered with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Hanyang University to create an ear-mounted EEG device. The prototype has been successfully tested to determine sleepiness and liking of certain videos by analyzing brain activity while watching them.

The drowsiness detector could be useful for drivers, and the preference detection feature — for more precise targeted advertising. There is no information on plans to bring this device to market.
