Separately, Amazon is preparing a specialized version of glasses for its couriers. Internally, the project is called Amelia. The plan is to produce around 100,000 units to be used by delivery workers.
In contrast to the upcoming consumer version, the glasses for couriers will be more massive, and the built-in display will be used to navigate and display delivery instructions. According to Reuters, the device will be able to show step-by-step routes right on the built-in screen, helping to optimize the delivery process.
Competition in the AR market
Amazon is joining a race that already includes Meta*, Google, Samsung, and Snap. Specifically, Meta* is preparing to unveil its new smart glasses Hypernova at the Connect event. Rumor has it that they will feature a mini display for notifications and apps. In parallel, Meta* is working on full-fledged AR glasses called Orion.
Amazon previously introduced Echo Frames third-generation smartglasses in 2023, but they failed to compete on functionality with Meta* and Ray-Ban devices. The launch of AR glasses will be the company’s next step towards building an ecosystem of wearable devices.
