2K Studios has confirmed the development of a new game about college basketball

On the eve of the release of NBA 2K26, publisher 2K has revealed that it’s working on a new game about college basketball. The company’s last such project, College Hoops 2K8, was released back in 2007.

2K has announced partnerships with university programs and confirmed that the future project will feature more than 100 teams from around the country. The announcement appeared on Platform X hours before the release of NBA 2K26, and coincided with leaks from Extra Points that the company is in talks for licenses.

The developers have hinted that the first “surprises” will arrive as early as early 2026, with “big plans” tied to 2027 and beyond. Apparently, the NBA 2K26 update with colleges will be an interim step before a full-fledged college basketball game, scheduled for 2027.

Student basketball remains extremely popular, even though individual games about it stopped being released back in the 2010s. Both EA and 2K actively released such projects in the 2000s, but then they disappeared from the market. College Hoops 2K8, released in November 2007 with Greg Oden on the cover, was the last installment in the series from 2K.

The resurgence of interest in sports simulators is due to EA’s successful relaunch of College Football. However, EA has had trouble: the company hinted at a new college basketball game over the summer, but according to Extra Points, universities were skeptical of its plans. In the end, many favored 2K’s proposal – first integrating colleges into NBA 2K, then releasing a standalone game.

It remains an open question whether EA will try to resuscitate its idea, or whether 2K will enter the college basketball simulation market in 2027 with no competitors.
