Apple’s AI-enabled smart glasses could come out in late 2026

The company is preparing the first glasses with cameras, microphones and Siri voice assistant

According to Bloomberg, Apple plans to introduce the first smart glasses with AI in late 2026. This will be part of the company’s new strategy to release smart devices. Engineers are now actively working on the device to finalize the development by the deadline.

The new model will be equipped with cameras, microphones and speakers that will collect data about the user’s environment and actions. This information will help the Siri voice assistant give more accurate answers. The glasses will be able to take calls, follow voice commands, translate speech in real time, play music, and plot routes.

Without AR, but with a focus on functionality

Despite expectations, Apple’s first generation of smart glasses won’t get augmented reality (AR) support. Although Apple CEO Tim Cook is actively promoting AR, according to Bloomberg, the technology is not yet ready for full implementation in the glasses. The model is being developed under the internal codename N401 (formerly N50).

The glasses will be similar in features to Ray-Ban models with AI from Meta* and upcoming glasses with Android XR, a special version of Android for headsets and smartglasses.

Device and Software

Apple is creating a separate energy-efficient chip for smart glasses. It will be based on the chip architecture from the Apple Watch, but will get rid of unnecessary modules. This will reduce power consumption while maintaining functionality.

Apple plans to get prototypes of the glasses from overseas suppliers by the end of 2025. Bloomberg’s inside sources confirm these plans, but the company has not yet officially made any product announcements.

Vector for long-term development

In the future, Apple expects to introduce AR functions into glasses. It is with this direction that the company associates the potential of a new type of device, which in the long term may become the successor to the iPhone. However, as Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman points out, Apple’s full-fledged AR glasses won’t appear until 2028 at the earliest.

In the meantime, Meta* is set to release the first glasses with full AR as early as 2027, according to Gurman’s prediction. They’ll allow you to see notifications, images and other information right in your field of vision, without turning to your smartphone.

* Owned by Meta, it is recognized as an extremist organization in Russia and its activities are banned.
