Apple is shutting down the TV series “Mythic Quest” after four seasons

Apple TV+ is shutting down one of its most colorful comedies – the series “Mythic Quest” has officially been discontinued after four seasons. The final episode of season four will air this week in a renewed version to bring the story to a logical conclusion.

The creators of the popular show, which tells the behind-the-scenes of the video game industry, made the decision to wrap up the project despite the fact that season four was not originally planned to be the final season. However, the ending of the final episode was reshot and expanded to give fans a proper farewell.

What Mythic Quest is and why its closure is important

“Mythic Quest” is a satirical comedy that came out in February 2020 and was one of the first original Apple TV+ projects. The plot revolves around a team of developers working on a fictional MMORPG at Mythic Quest Studios. The lead roles were played by Rob McElhenney, Charlotte Nicdao, Danny Pudi and David Hornsby. The show played up the inner workings of game creation, balancing absurdity and irony, and quickly won acclaim from viewers and critics.

The series has had four full seasons and two specials since its inception, one of which was filmed remotely on an iPhone during the pandemic.

Finale not according to plan: how Apple and the writers rewrote the ending

Since season four wasn’t intended to be the last season, its original finale ended on a disturbing note, leaving viewers waiting for a sequel. However, following the decision to close the project, the creators – Megan Ganz, Rob McElhenney and David Hornsby – made edits to the last episode. It will now feature a new finale designed to close out storylines and bid farewell to the characters.

In a joint statement, the producers noted:”Finales are always difficult. But after four incredible seasons, we’re proud to have created this world and grateful to the entire team. We didn’t want to just say ‘game over’, we wanted to say goodbye. With Apple’s help, we were able to do it properly.”

Why Apple is shutting down one of its most notable series

The closure of “Mythic Quest” coincided with reports of major losses for Apple TV+. According to media reports, the company’s streaming arm is losing as much as $1 billion annually as Apple tries to grow its subscription base and expand its library of content.

In the face of this financial strategy, even popular projects are at risk. Despite a strong fan base and positive reviews, “Mythic Quest” has been hit by cutbacks.

And despite its strong fanbase and positive reviews, “Mythic Quest” has fallen under the radar.

What’s next: spin-offs and a new chapter

Although the main story has come to an end, the series’ universe continues to live on in the format of the Side Quest mini-series. This spin-off consists of four episodes and explores the lives of secondary characters and gamers associated with Mythic Quest.

The original season four finale aired on March 26 and ended on a cliffhanger. An updated version of the final episode, featuring a new ending, will be available later this week.
