Apple has released the iPhone 16E

Apple has released the iPhone 16E

Apple has officially announced the iPhone 16E, which replaces the iPhone SE. The new iPhone 16E has been redesigned, losing the home button and Touch ID, but instead gaining Face ID, an A18 processor and support for Apple Intelligence. The smartphone was also equipped with a USB-C connector, but it lost MagSafe and fast wireless charging. The price of the device will start at $599.

Goodbye Touch ID: new design and screen

The iPhone 16E looks similar to the iPhone 14 and was the first budget iPhone with Face ID. Instead of the familiar home button and fingerprint scanner, it now uses facial recognition, and the front camera is placed in a notch at the top of the screen – no Dynamic Island like the flagships.

The smartphone gets a 6.06-inch OLED display, which is almost the same as the standard iPhone 16 (6.12 inches). So Apple no longer has any truly compact models, unless rumors of a future iPhone 17 Air are confirmed. The dimensions of the iPhone 16E are slightly different from the regular iPhone 16: it’s 0.1mm narrower and 0.7mm lower.

The hardware: powerful A18 and support for Apple Intelligence

iPhone 16E features an A18 processor – the same one found in the iPhone 16. That makes it powerful enough to handle Apple Intelligence, a new set of AI features including smart notifications. By comparison, even the iPhone 15 without the Pro prefix doesn’t support these features.

PiPhone 16E has the same A18 processor as the iPhone 16.

Apple previously reported that the minimum requirement for Apple Intelligence is 8GB of RAM, so the 16E likely got at least that much. The base version now starts with 128GB of internal storage – there will no longer be a 64GB model.

Apple’s latest announcement is that the 16E will be available in the 16E.

Camera: single lens, but 48 megapixels

The main difference between the iPhone 16E and more expensive models is the lack of additional cameras. There’s only one 48-megapixel main lens installed here. Despite that, the device supports portrait mode, night photography, and other proprietary Apple algorithms.

USB-C, but no MagSafe

The smartphone has lost its Lightning port and now features USB-C, which was done in part to comply with European Union requirements. However, the 16E doesn’t support MagSafe or fast wireless charging – Qi charging is limited to 7.5W, while more expensive models support up to 25W.

First iPhone with Apple’s own modem

iPhone 16E is the first model to use Apple’s proprietary chip rather than Qualcomm’s modem. The company has long sought to reduce its reliance on third-party suppliers, and now we can see the first results of that effort. Time will tell how well it performs, but it’s likely to become the standard for the iPhone 17 lineup.

Price and release date

iPhone 16E will be available to order starting February 23 with prices starting at $599. That’s noticeably more expensive than the iPhone SE 2022, which started at $429, but the new device has more storage (128GB vs. 64GB) and a modern design. It’s scheduled to officially go on sale on February 28.

The new device will be available on February 28.
