Nintendo closes Switch repair subscription service after 1 year of operation

Nintendo is shutting down its Switch repair subscription service in Japan after just one year. Wide Care, a service costing 200 yen per month ($1.50) or 2,000 yen per year ($15), was launched last summer and called «a fixed-price warranty repair service that you can sign up for at any time».

But according to Perfectly Nintendo, as of Aug. 31, 2023, the platform owner will no longer accept new subscriptions or contract renewals. Products covered by Wide Care include Switch and Switch Lite consoles, Joy-Con controllers, a Switch dock and AC adapters.

In addition to natural breakdowns, water damage and accidental damage are covered. Nintendo has not announced plans to launch the service outside of Japan.

The company recently reported a slowdown in Switch sales, but suggested that new hardware won’t be released until April 2024 — by that time, the current console will be in its eighth year on the market.
