The Galaxy S25 Ultra’s glass has become less scratch-resistant, but Samsung has a good reason for that

A fresh durability test of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra has revealed an unexpected point: the new product’s screen is less scratch-proof than last year’s model. Fans have already started criticizing Samsung for this “deterioration,” but apparently the company had a good reason to take this step.

Why did Samsung “worsen” the glass protection?”

.

The stability test tests a smartphone screen for scratches with tools of varying hardness. Typically, flagship devices start getting visible damage at level 6 on the Mohs scale, with serious scratches appearing at level 7.

Samsung’s flagship devices are usually the first to get visible damage at level 7.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra surprised users last year by withstanding a Level 7 with no visible marks. This gave the impression that Samsung is improving the durability of its displays. However, the Galaxy S25 Ultra returned to its previous standard, starting to scratch as early as level 6, which many perceived as a step backwards.

But this decision has a logical explanation: the harder the glass, the more fragile it is. Increasing scratch resistance makes the material stiffer, which means it’s easier to break when dropped. Soft glass, on the other hand, is more pliable and better able to withstand impact.

Samsung chose drop resistance over scratch protection

While analyzing statistics on warranty repairs, Samsung has likely concluded that smartphone drops are more common than serious scratches. Most users either use protective glass or their screens are rarely exposed to sharp objects.

Samsung has thus sacrificed scratch resistance for impact resistance, which makes sense given user preferences.

Should I upgrade to the Galaxy S25 Ultra?

.

If there’s any reason not to upgrade to the S25 Ultra, it’s not the glass, but the minimal hardware changes. This year, Samsung has bet on artificial intelligence rather than a drastic feature upgrade.

Samsung’s focus this year has been on the S25 Ultra.
