BMW plans to launch the i4 electric two-door coupe in 2028

The company’s next wave of electric cars will be built on the new Neue Klasse platform. The first cars on this platform are expected to be unveiled by 2028 – these include the iX3 crossover, due out as early as next year, and the i3 sedan, scheduled for 2026. There are also rumors of development of the i3 Touring station wagon and the iX4 crossover coupe. The remaining models are likely to be customized for the Chinese market and produced locally.

What happens after the first Neue Klasse-based release? Sources inside BMW say the company has already approved the release of an i4 coupe. We’re talking about a true two-door coupe, not another Gran Coupe. The internal code of the new coupe is “NA2” and it is possible that a convertible will follow. For now, however, the project codenamed “NA3” has not been given the «green light» as BMW doubts the demand for convertibles. This segment of cars is losing popularity: the Z4, 4 Series and 8 Series convertibles will probably cease to exist in the coming years due to low demand. But it’s hard to imagine a BMW lineup without a convertible model, so hope remains.

Production of the i4 coupe is set to begin in the second half of 2028, so those who want one will have to wait. However, it’s possible that the i4 won’t be BMW’s first electric coupe. Recall the mysterious two-door prototype spotted in tests in early July: it had two doors, a curved roof line and distinctive Neue Klasse design features. It’s not yet clear whether this car will be a permanent member of the lineup or a limited edition. A third, less impressive possibility is that it’s just a test platform for the Neue Klasse.

It’s important to note that not all of BMW’s new electric cars will be built on the NK platform. There are iX5, iX6 and iX7 models in development that will use the proven CLAR platform. The largest of these SUVs, the iX7, will be the basis for the first electric vehicle from ALPINA, the iX7 ALPINA 100, which will take its place above the BMW iX7 M70.
