Apple Passwords app will be coming to iOS 18

With iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, passwords will no longer be buried in «Settings».
Too many people live with one or two passwords that they use for everything. That problem is exacerbated by Apple’s tendency to hide necessary features, such as a password manager, deep within the «Settings» app.

All passwords will no longer be buried in «Settings».

This will change with the release of iOS 18 and other new operating systems, Bloomberg reports. Apple will introduce a new dedicated app «Passwords» for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and visionOS 2. AppleInsider confirmed the existence of such an app with the help of people familiar with the upcoming releases. The app will replicate the features of the «Passwords» menu that already exists in «Settings». It will also get a few other features, such as viewing passwords to Wi-Fi networks. The app also manages passkeys, 2FA tokens and notifications of potential hacks.

Building a standalone app would raise awareness of built-in functionality across Apple’s ecosystem. Rather than resorting to less secure password options that end up being compromised, users can rely on the mechanisms that exist on their devices.

The app will also provide users with a better understanding of built-in functionality across the entire Apple ecosystem.

In iOS 17, Apple introduced a password sharing feature that allows users to create groups of passwords that can be shared with anyone. This, and a separate app, could reduce the number of companies like 1Password. However, Apple’s more basic offering won’t be able to meet the needs of all users.

The new app is said to eventually get a dedicated Passwords app for Windows. This will help users choose Apple over alternatives if they are cross-platform users. WWDC will be held on June 10 and will showcase all the new updates to the operating system. It is expected to be a software-focused event with big announcements about Apple’s artificial intelligence.
