“Tinkoff switches its ATMs to Linux and proprietary software

Tinkoff has developed its own software for ATMs on the open source Linux operating system as part of its import substitution strategy. This will not only reduce dependence on third parties, but also increase security.

The bank notes that now almost all ATMs in Russia and around the world run on Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Switching to its own Linux-based software will give the company full control over the system, thereby improving security.

The bank says that the ATMs are now running on Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

“Previously, we have already launched production of our own ATMs designed and assembled in Russia. Now we have decided to go a step further – to import software as well. And not just to order software from Russian suppliers, but to create our own local development,” said Pavel Vlasov, deputy director of Tinkoff’s payment systems department.

All the software of the device, including the logic of ATM operation (backend) and user interface, was developed by the bank’s specialists. The first devices with the new software have been installed and put on sale in Moscow.

Earlier, Sber started the transition to Linux in its ATMs.
