File Explorer in Windows 11 has received an update

Usually, when Microsoft adds a new feature to a Windows 11 Beta or Dev branch, it is automatically included so that people can test it and find bugs to report. However, sometimes Microsoft hides some features, presumably because they are not yet finalized. If you have the Windows 11Beta branch installed and you want to poke around a bit, you can now enable a hidden File Explorer feature that is not visible by default.

File Explorer in Windows 11 will get an update

If this is the first you’re hearing about them, PhantomOcean3 is very good at digging into Windows 11 test builds and spotting features that the Redmond giant is working on. For example, back in March, they spotted that «Notepad» spell checker would appear in «Notepad». Now they’re back with the unveiling of File Explorer, which adds new elements to Windows 11, including a change to the display of sections on the home page, as well as a new «General» section.

They’ve also discovered a new section in File Explorer.

If you’re in beta, you can use ViveTool to enable this feature. PhantomOcean3 claims that the command «vivetool /enable /id:45130483» will bring the new File Explorer out of invisibility. Keep in mind that this is still a work in progress and not intended for public viewing, so expect a lot of bugs. One of the responses to PhantomOcean3’s post claims that there is an issue where attached shortcuts will be duplicated, so it may be best to wait until Microsoft introduces the feature officially.

An update to the new File Explorer is still a work in progress.
