That’s right, Snake is back and looking better than ever. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater — a title that has long been rumored but was recently officially announced. The remake of the hit PlayStation 2 game, which was the third major installment of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, is often considered the best by fans and critics alike.

After series creator Hideo Kojima left Konami, however, the idea of another team handling the remake was met with skepticism. Konami seems to have confidence in the project, so we’ll just have to wait until we get our hands on it to see what the final product turns out to be. The remake will be the series’ first major project since the release of spin-off Metal Gear Survive (2018), and marks a shift in Konami’s corporate strategy to refocus its efforts on third-party games after initially distancing itself from the mainstream video game market and prioritizing mobile games and a presence in arcades.

The release date for the remake has yet to be named, but Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater was unabashedly revealed in Sony’s official 2024 release video. Barring any delays, it looks like we’ll be able to play the remake as early as this year.

As mentioned, Kojima is no longer at Konami (he’s busy working on Death Stranding 2 and OD), so another studio will have to take over development of the remake. When the game was still rumored, there were a lot of options, and the trailer itself didn’t shed any light on the subject, but Konami has made a statement about who will be leading the project: «In addition to Konami’s development team involved in the Metal Gear series, the game is being fully supported by Virtuos — a development company that has collaborated on past Metal Gear series».

Trailers

The announcement trailer only showed clips and no gameplay. The focus is on the jungle of the original Metal Gear Solid 3. Following a bird in the jungle, we can see the natural food chain as one predator after another tries to eat another. Only in the final shot do we see a camouflaged Snake emerge from the shadows.

As for gameplay, while nothing was shown, Konami said in another statement that the game will feature «all of the original voice characters, story and combat survival features, but enhanced and developed». This suggests that, mechanically, it won’t be a faithful remake of the past, but a game with more modern mechanics and controls.

The previous statement about the game’s inclusion of the original storyline at least indicates that the plot will remain intact, but that’s still questionable. Given how beloved the original’s story is, it would be pretty risky to spoil it now, especially without Kojima.

Besides the announcement of improved and updated combat survival, we haven’t seen or heard anything about how the game will play out. We suspect it will remain a third-person game, and assume the world will seamlessly connect rather than bursting into loading screens, but we can’t say anything definitive just yet.
