iOS 26 review: “liquid glass,” chat backgrounds and more

On September 15, 2025, Apple released new versions of its operating systems for all of its devices. If you thought you’d missed any iOS 19 or iOS 20, you’re hastily reassured – for some unknown reason (likely to avoid confusion about which update it is), the company has switched to a year-by-year calculus. It doesn’t affect anything, so let’s take a closer look at what’s so new Apple has added to iOS 26.

The latest update, iOS 18, feels more like Android, as Apple introduced features it hadn’t previously offered. The result is a radical shift from restrictive to more useful and convenient. You can get a feel for the updates best on the iPad and iPhone.

Which phones can upgrade to iOS 26

The first thing you need to know is whether or not your phone can pull a modern update.

  • The iPhone 17 series;
  • The iPhone 16 series;
  • iPhone 15 series;
  • The iPhone 14 series;
  • The iPhone 13 series;
  • The iPhone 12 series;
  • The iPhone 11 series
  • Phone SE 2nd generation and later

Some users notice bugs on their devices after the update. For example, they complain en masse about fast charge consumption. Yes, it’s probably something like that, but there are two things to consider. First – it’s not so critical that you should sound the alarm and worry about it unnecessarily. Second – the problem will definitely be solved by future updates. But if you do fear for the safety of your device, wait until the update stabilizes.

“Liquid Glass” is iOS 26’s calling card

The new design looks fresh. You’ll especially notice it if you’re lucky enough to pick a screensaver for the lock screen. “Liquid Glass” makes the entire menu (app icons, time, and notifications on the lock screen) transparent. Interestingly, there is glare on many parts of the interface. If you tilt or turn the smartphone slightly, the glare will also move, as if really reflecting the light on the glass. Also changed the appearance of some icons – clock, photo, settings. Not much, but enough to make you notice it.
