The iPhone 17 may need a new Apple adapter for fast charging

The iPhone 17 series got one major improvement — faster battery charging. However, not everyone will be able to take full advantage of it, as Apple has released a new power adapter that may be a must-have to maximize charging speeds.
New Dynamic Power Adapter
According to official specs, the iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max charge to 50 percent in 20 minutes, and the iPhone Air — in 30 minutes. But those results are only achieved with the new Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max.
- Power up to 60W is only maintained for about 18 minutes, after which the device switches to 40W to avoid overheating;
- support for the new AVS (Adjustable Voltage Supply) protocol, which provides more precise voltage selection and efficient charging without overheating the battery.
Compatibility Issue
It’s unclear whether the new iPhones will charge at full speed with conventional chargers that only support the PPS (Programmable Power Supply) protocol. Most existing adapters work with this technology.

Apple’s new adapter has a limitation: it doesn’t support PPS at all, offering only USB Power Delivery 3.0. That means it may be less versatile for charging other devices.”
Compared to competitors
For example, Google Pixel Flex Dual Port 67W USB-C Fast Charger supports both AVS, PPS, and USB PD 3.2. It also has two USB-C ports and up to 67W of power. True, it costs more — $59.99 vs. Apple’s $39
Total
Apple is going its own way again: the company is among the first to introduce new standards, but it does so in its own format, leaving users to choose —buy a new proprietary adapter or settle for slower charging.
