Mediatek Dimensity 9400+: the new flagship chip for 2025 smartphones

On October 9, MediaTek unveiled its latest processor Dimensity 9400, built using TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process (N3E). It is the largest smartphone chip ever with a 150 mm² area and 30 billion transistors. The new processor is 40 percent more energy efficient than the previous Dimensity 9300 model.

The new Dimensity 9300 is the most powerful processor available.

The Dimensity 9400 configuration includes:

    .

  • Four «ultra-large» Prime CPU cores;
  • Four large CPU cores;
  • The absence of small energy efficient cores;

This configuration has already been proven in the Dimensity 9300, which was used in last year’s vivo X100 lineup. The new chip has been praised by the manufacturer and will now form the basis for the vivo X200 lineup.

Improvements to the Dimensity 9400+

As with the Dimensity 9300+, the improved version of the Dimensity 9400+ will offer small changes:

  • Enhanced CPU clock speeds (expected up to 3.70 GHz compared to 3.63 GHz for the base version);
  • Accelerated GPU for improved performance in games and graphics-intensive applications;

The Qualcomm chip Snapdragon 8 Elite remains the performance leader, thanks to clock speeds of up to 4.32GHz for the Prime cores and 3.53GHz for the six performance cores. Despite the improvements, the Dimensity 9400+ won’t overtake the Snapdragon 8 Elite in speed.

MediaTek’s challenges in the U.S. market

Despite its success in the global market, MediaTek is having trouble popularizing its chips in the US. The reasons are the company’s perception as a low-cost manufacturer and poor brand recognition compared to Qualcomm and the Snapdragon lineup.

MediaTek’s chips in the U.S. have been difficult to popularize.

MediaTek remains the largest smartphone processor maker in the world, ahead of Qualcomm, Samsung and Apple. However, the company will have to overcome reputation and perception barriers to strengthen its position in the U.S.

MediaTek’s position in the U.S. has been recognized over the years.
