Wearable devices are increasingly being called «guardians of health» because they already know how to detect hypertension, sleep apnea or atrial fibrillation. Now Samsung is working on another vital feature — early detection of heart failure right from the wrist.

Samsung is now working on another vital feature — early detection of heart failure right from the wrist.

The company said it has developed technology to recognize left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) — a condition in which weakened heart muscles can’t pump enough blood. It is a major factor in heart failure, accounting for more than half of heart failure cases worldwide.

The diagnostic uses an artificial intelligence algorithm trained on clinical data from 12-channel ECGs. On the Galaxy Watch, it analyzes single-channel ECG readings and is able to detect LVSD at an early stage. The development by Korean startup Medical AI has already received approval from the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

The feature is expected to be embedded in a system app and go for FDA certification in the future.

In parallel, Samsung is experimenting with non-invasive devices to monitor brain activity. In collaboration with Hanyang University in Seoul, the company has created a prototype EEG headset worn around the ear. Tests have already been conducted to detect drowsiness — useful when driving, and to analyze the brain’s response to video content. The technology could eventually be used in marketing, and future Galaxy Buds could be a suitable platform for it.
