It’s been more than two years since Samsung announced it was developing an XR headset, and it’s been ten months since it showed off a Project Moohan prototype. However, the device has yet to hit the market. In an interview with CNET, representatives from Google and Qualcomm explained the delay and revealed new details.

According to Samir Samat, head of Android at Google, and Alex Katusian, head of Qualcomm’s mobile and XR division, there have been «subtle but critical» tweaks to the headset. These include improving the weight balance and reducing light entering the case, making the device more comfortable for long periods of use.

Project Moohan runs on a Qualcomm XR2 chip capable of simultaneously processing video streams and data from 12 cameras. Katusian noted that the mechanicals of the headset are now balanced and better thought out than in earlier versions.

The important part was the integration of Gemini — Google’s new AI assistant that can «see and hear» the same things the user does to give more useful answers. In a demonstration, Google showed how you can explore landmarks in Google Maps and ask Gemini questions about specific places in XR mode.

According to insiders, the device will get two 4K micro-OLED displays, built-in speakers and microphones, 16GB of RAM, an eye-tracking system and an external battery. It will be controlled by gestures, voice, and motion controllers.

Google has previously said Samsung will unveil the first XR headset running Android by the end of 2025, so its official announcement is imminent.
