YASA has unveiled the world’s most powerful motor for electric cars

The UK-based YASA, a Mercedes-Benz company, has announced a new electric motor with an impressive output of up to 550 kW, which equates to 738 hp. Surprisingly, with a weight of only 13.1 kg, the engineers managed to achieve a specific power of 42 kW/kg. This figure is more than three times that of competitors including Siemens, Donut Labs and H3X.

The disk-shaped electric motor is based on axial-flow technology. Importantly, there are no expensive components in its design, such as cobalt-iron plates or elements made using 3D printing.

The development is aimed at mass production with a potential volume of up to 50,000 units per year.

It is crucial that the engine has been developed specifically for the automotive industry, unlike most record-breaking motors with high power density that were created for aeronautical purposes.

YASA is well ahead of the competition: by comparison, the Evolito motor demonstrates 28 kW/kg, while Donut Labs recently claimed a world record of 15.8 kW/kg, which has now lost its relevance. YASA is confident that this is just the first step towards new achievements.
