Honda Integra Type R sold for $204,000 at auction in the US

A rare sports car from the late 1990s has finally become a collector’s classic.
A second-generation Honda Integra Type R (DC2), with its distinctive four round headlights and Phoenix Yellow bodywork, has set a new record at a US auction: a 2001 car with just 4,800 miles (7,700 km) on the clock went under the hammer for $204,000 – almost 16 million rubles. That’s an all-time record for a mass-market front-wheel-drive car of its time.

Almost like new: 7,700 kilometers and perfect condition
The example up for auction has been owned by a private Honda collector from Wisconsin for the past 11 years and has been stored indoors for most of that time. Despite virtually no use, the car has been regularly serviced. As a result, the technical and visual condition of the car is near perfect.
The interior retains its original finish, including the standard audio system with CD and cassette player. No signs of wear on the steering wheel, seats, gear lever and pedals indicate careful or no use at all.
The interior is still in its original trim, including the standard audio system with CD and cassette player.
Rare version and cult status
The sold-out Integra Type R belongs to the second series of the Type R, originally sold in the U.S. under the Acura brand. Only 1,173 of these cars were produced. The model is deservedly considered the benchmark among front-wheel-drive sports cars, with its lightweight body, boosted 195-hp 1.8-liter VTEC, reinforced chassis, self-locking differential, and exceptionally lively road behavior.

In its day, the Integra Type R went for $24,930 (about $45,000 when adjusted for inflation). Today it’s seen as the quintessential Honda engineering approach and a symbol of the Japanese sports car era of the late ’90s.
From “civilian” Civic to investment target
Although the Integra is essentially a derivative of the Honda Civic, its “supercharged” version has long been a collector’s hunt. It’s all the more surprising that a model originally designed as an affordable youth coupe now competes on price with iconic sports cars.
