BMW is preparing an electric station wagon i3 Touring – the model is already in development

BMW BMW has officially confirmed that an electric i3 Touring station wagon will be coming to the Neue Klasse lineup. This was announced by BMW Group Adrian van Hooijdonk s head of design in a conversation with British Autocar. According to him, strong demand for the M3 Touring and M5 Touring has convinced the company that customers want to see this format among electric cars as well.

The new BMW i3 Touring station wagon will debut in 2026

Development of an electric version of the station wagon based on the Neue Klasse platform is already underway, with a premiere expected in 2026. It will be the second model of the new electric architecture after the next-generation iX3 crossover.

Preliminary information, i3 Touring will be a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3, but will be offered in two body styles at once – sedan and station wagon. BMW is thus betting not only on high performance, but also on expanding the form factor in the electric car segment.

Power of up to 1000+ hp and a range of up to 800 kilometers

According to insider reports, electric cars based on the Neue Klasse platform will have motors with outputs ranging from 300 to more than 1,000 hp, as well as different battery capacities, allowing them to travel up to 800 kilometers without recharging. All next-generation models will share a unified architecture with a focus on efficiency, modularity and digital technologies.

Design in the spirit of the Vision Neue Klasse and the VDX concept

The concept car BMW Vision Neue Klasse, as well as the show car VDX recently shown at the Shanghai Motor Show, give us an idea of the exterior of the upcoming i3 Touring. Both concepts are designed in the brand’s new styling:

  • Lowered glazing line
  • expressive aerodynamic splitter
  • innovative three-dimensional light signature instead of the classic grille

Panoramic iDrive X digital platform

All Neue Klasse models will receive the new Panoramic iDrive X infotainment system. Using the VDX as an example, you can see what this will look like: a huge 17.9-inch central display, complemented by a narrow panoramic screen stretching across the entire width of the front panel. Configuration for production models is being kept under wraps for now.
