Microsoft has updated the list of obsolete features in client versions of Windows

Microsoft has announced that it will no longer support a number of deprecated web components and features in its client versions of Windows, especially related to the EdgeHTML engine and web apps in Windows 8 and 8.1.

  • Web View is a built-in component for displaying web content;
  • HTML/JavaScript Windows apps – including hosted web apps and UWP (Universal Windows Platform) web apps previously used in Windows 8 and 8.1;
  • Older Progressive Web Apps (PWAs);
  • Microsoft Edge developer tools (EdgeHTML) – based on the EdgeHTML engine, which has been replaced by Chromium.

Microsoft is no longer developing these components, as they are based on the deprecated EdgeHTML engine used in the original version of Microsoft Edge in the Windows 10 era before the transition to the Chromium-based browser.

Recommendations for developers

The company advises moving to Chromium-based WebView2, and using modern web technologies and progressive web applications for support and security.

It’s important to note that Microsoft is not discontinuing support or releasing security updates for current legacy components — the exact timeline for the end of support and removal of these features has not yet been determined.

  • WMIC (Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line)
  • PowerShell 2.0
