Samsung will bring back the missing shooting modes in One UI 8.5, but through a separate app

Galaxy S25 owners who refrained from installing the One UI 8.5 beta because of the disappearance of familiar camera features can exhale: Samsung has confirmed the return of Dual Rec and Single Take modes. However, they won’t appear exactly where expected.

A Samsung spokesperson on the official community forum confirmed that both features will return to the flagship Galaxy S25 lineup with the second beta of the update. However, the integration will happen in an unconventional way – the modes will move from the main camera menu to the Camera Assistant app, which has been an optional tool until now.

Samsung’s spokesperson confirmed that both features will return to the flagship Galaxy S25 lineup with the second beta of the update.

What will change in the second beta release

The Camera Assistant app will get an update at the same time as the second beta firmware release. In addition to the two shooting modes mentioned, it’ll get “Personalized settings for professional photography.” The wording sounds a bit vague, but most likely we’re talking about the ability to save custom presets of Pro-mode settings, which was previously rumored. It’s also possible that the feature will be available directly in Pro mode, bypassing Camera Assistant.

Samsung’s controversial decision

The logic behind moving Dual Rec and Single Take from the standard camera interface to a separate utility is questionable. Camera Assistant was originally conceived as an add-on tool for enthusiasts looking to expand control over individual shooting capabilities. Putting useful features in an optional downloadable app could lead to many users simply not discovering them and thinking that the manufacturer has permanently removed these modes.

The Korean giant may be planning to make Camera Assistant a pre-installed component of the system starting with One UI 8.5. But even then, it’s unclear why it would be necessary to move the modes out of their usual location.

We can only hope that Samsung will reconsider this decision before the stable One UI 8.5 release. Hiding sought-after tools behind extra steps is a questionable strategy, especially when it comes to a flagship smartphone’s camera.

The second beta of One UI 8.5 is expected soon, at which point we’ll see how convenient the new implementation of camera modes turns out to be in practice.
