According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is preparing to release the iPhone Air 2 in the spring of 2027. The device will continue the company’s ultra-thin smartphone project, and is expected to feature Apple’s first 2-nanometer chip, which should improve battery life and overall efficiency.

Earlier this week, conflicting reports emerged about the status of the iPhone Air 2, with a newsletter initially claiming that Apple had indefinitely delayed the phone’s release due to poor sales of the first-generation model. However, another report later clarified that the launch had been delayed by just six months, from fall 2026 to spring 2027.

In the latest report, Gurman confirms the delay, but emphasizes that Apple never intended for the iPhone Air lineup to follow the usual annual refresh cycle. The company decided not to call the current model the “iPhone 17 Air” to distinguish it from the Pro and standard versions.

The iPhone Air 2 is not expected to receive significant visual updates. Apple will focus on incremental improvements, mainly improving battery life with a more efficient 2nm chip. It’s also considering adding a second main camera for ultra-wide-angle shots.

Apple originally expected the Air lineup to take up about 6-8% of new iPhone sales, which is comparable to the iPhone 16 Plus. The smartphone was given a lot of attention at its September unveiling, but marketing activity has waned since then. Like the iPhone mini, the Air targets a narrow segment, but has failed to turn that interest into substantial sales. Even at $100 less than the iPhone 17 Pro, it falls short in terms of battery capacity, heat output, and camera capabilities.

Apple is using the iPhone Air lineup to test components and designs that could be used in a future foldable iPhone. The Air is similar in structure and materials to Apple’s current foldable prototype and serves as a test bed for supply chain and engineering solutions.
