AMD prepares to release AI scaling technology for graphics cards

D AMD’s AI scaling technology will soon be available. On Tuesday, the company announced the upcoming release of a new technology called FSR “Redstone” -its answer to NVIDIA’s DLSS.

Scaling remains an important aspect when comparing NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. Despite the big advances in FSR 5, DLSS technology still takes the lead in almost every aspect. AMD hopes that Redstone will help close this gap.

The company isn’t revealing all the details, but it is known that Redstone will offer improved AI scaling, AI-driven frame generation, as well as ray regeneration technology and radiance caching. As PC Gamer notes, Redstone’s ray regeneration features are already integrated into Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

Slightly confusingly, AMD also said that Redstone can run on Nvidia graphics cards because it’s developed using code from the ROCm project known as AMD ML2CODE (Machine Learning to Code). In this way, Redstone’s FSR neural rendering technology can be “converted” to computational shader code. “This means that the FSR Redstone neural rendering core can run on other companies’ graphics cards as well,” said Chris Hall, senior director of software engineering and ROCm project lead at AMD.

AMD is actively promoting the new technology as a key benefit of its RDNA 4 series graphics cards. New products like the Radeon RX 9070 series are some of the most powerful in recent years. If AMD can successfully implement and roll out Redstone, even lower-priced models like the Radeon RX 9060 XT could become very attractive to buyers.
