next AirPods Pro could feature built-in infrared cameras
Rumors have surfaced on the social platform X suggesting that the next generation of Apple’s AirPods Pro may come equipped with built-in infrared (IR) cameras. These cameras are rumored to “see” the surrounding environment and analyze the user’s surroundings, potentially enhancing spatial audio performance-especially when paired with Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
According to insider Kosutami, each AirPod Pro might house at least one IR camera. Their primary role would be to assess the environment, enabling more precise and realistic spatial audio tuning. This indicates Apple is not only focusing on advancing audio quality but also integrating visual awareness into the AirPods ecosystem.

These rumors align with earlier predictions from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who reported back in 2024 that Apple was developing AirPods with infrared cameras, estimating a possible release in 2026. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also noted in March 2025 that Apple is exploring the addition of IR cameras to AirPods in the near future. Meanwhile, another insider known as Instant Digital claims an AirPods Pro model with IR cameras might launch as soon as this year.
The exact purpose of these cameras remains up for debate. Some sources believe they will solely enhance spatial audio capabilities, particularly in tandem with Vision Pro. Others speculate they might enable gesture controls, similar to the existing head nod and shake actions used to accept or reject calls.
It’s important to note that all this information is currently based on rumors. It’s still unclear whether this refers to a completely new AirPods Pro model or an upgraded version of the current third-generation AirPods Pro.
