Auchan tests age verification via messenger Max for 18+ purchases

Ashan Retail Russia has launched testing of age verification via the national messenger MAX. Shoppers only need to scan a QR code from the “Digital ID” tab in their MAX profile and pay for 18+ merchandise at self-service checkouts. The technology works in two Auchan stores in Moscow and the Moscow region, and in the future it will be scaled to the entire chain.

  • Digital ID is created through biometrics, a new-style passport or driver’s license
  • Dynamic QR code is updated every 30 seconds and is screenshot protected
  • The QR code can only be accessed via Face ID or the owner’s fingerprint

The Digital ID is an analog of paper documents in the form of a QR code that allows you to confirm your age, student and multiple parent status. You can create a Digital ID in three ways: with the help of a validated biometrics, a new-style passport and a driver’s license. To create a Digital ID, you must select the “Digital ID” icon in your MAX profile and click on the “Create” button, provide the necessary consents and confirm your identity in one of the ways, take selfies and receive confirmation that your Digital ID is ready.

You can confirm your age with MAX without a paper passport or the help of a counselor. When purchasing 18+ products at self-service checkout counters, you need to scan the product, open the Digital ID in your messenger profile, select the “Confirm Age” option in the app, bring the QR code from the app to the reader and pay for the purchase.

And then scan the product, open the Digital ID in your messenger profile, select the “Confirm Age” option in the app, bring the QR code from the app to the reader and pay for the purchase.
