Google launches real-time voice search with AI

Google AI Mode has a new feature — real-time voice search. It’s similar to Gemini Live, but in Google’s iOS and Android app. Currently, the feature is only available to users in the US who are participating in an AI Mode experiment in the labs. But later, it should become available to regular users in other regions as well.
At a later date, the feature should be available to regular users in other regions.
The company is positioning it as the perfect way to search when you’re on the road or have a lot to do and you’re not comfortable hammering out the right question using the keyboard. You just have to open the Google app, tap the new icon, and ask your question. Then you can ask another question and so on. Google says you’ll get «easy-to-access links right on your screen so you can better explore the information».

The real-time search feature also works in the background, so you can continue a conversation even when you’re in another app. And the transcribe feature translates responses into text options. With AI Mode history, you can always go back to a specific answer and pick up where you left off.

The only question here is why this is necessary when Gemini Live already exists, and is much more accessible on Android. There’s no answer to that question yet. According to Google, Search Live uses a custom version of Gemini with enhanced voice capabilities. In the coming months, the app will allow you to use the camera in a conversation to show what you’re seeing in real time — again, like Gemini Live.
