Toyota unveils fully electric 2027 Highlander with up to 320-mile range
Toyota has officially revealed the 2027 Highlander, marking the model’s first fully electric iteration and the brand’s fourth EV currently available in the US market. This is also Toyota’s first electric vehicle assembled domestically and the company’s first EV with three rows of seating. The automaker is already selling electric versions of the C-HR crossover and the bZ series SUV stateside.
The new Highlander keeps the recognizable design cues of its predecessors but sports sharper body lines and wider wheel arches. It also features flush door handles reminiscent of Tesla’s design. These handles enhance aerodynamics, although similar designs were recently banned in China over safety concerns.
The 2027 electric Highlander will be available in XLE and Limited trims, each offering front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive options. At the top end, the Limited AWD model packs a 95.8 kWh battery, delivering an estimated range of up to 320 miles on a single charge according to Toyota. However, the automaker notes that EPA-certified figures, which are the industry standard for comparing EV ranges across brands, may differ from their internal estimates.
The XLE front-wheel-drive variant features a 77 kWh battery and an estimated range of up to 287 miles. The XLE AWD comes in two battery options: a 77 kWh pack offering about 270 miles and a 95.8 kWh pack matching the Limited’s 320-mile range. AWD models produce up to 338 horsepower, while front-wheel-drive versions peak at 221 horsepower.
All electric Highlander trims accommodate seven passengers, with a third row that folds flat to expand cargo space. Standard equipment includes heated front seats, while buyers can opt for heated and ventilated second-row seats.
Toyota plans to launch the 2027 Highlander EV by late 2026, with some regions potentially seeing availability as early as the beginning of next year. Pricing details will be announced closer to the sales start.
