Risk of escape

Mel Gibson has been partially released from the “prison” of mainstream cinema for his next thriller, “Flight Risk,” which is getting a theatrical release from Lionsgate. Except that Gibson only serves as director in this movie, which gives Mark Wahlberg the opportunity to fully reprise his role as a hired assassin named Daryl Booth. Venom: The Last Dance will supposedly be the “final” Venom movie, with Tom Hardy playing Eddie Brock and his alien symbiote. Plot details have yet to be revealed, but we know from the trailer that Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a soldier who tries to track down and capture Venom. Juno Temple plays a scientist with similar goals. Beyond that, we have no idea what will happen, or whether this movie can prevent the inevitable collapse of Sony’s weak Spider-Man-related films.

Romantic horror movies don’t come around much, but it’s not uncommon in Hollywood. Caroline Lindy wrote and directed “Your Monster,” in which “Scream 5” and “Abigail” star Melissa Barrera plays the role of Laura Franco, a young woman going through a bad breakup and cancer.

Laura’s life takes a strange turn when she finds a monster in her closet, literally. He’s played by Tommy Dewey. This monster may turn out to be the best man Laura has ever met, and the two strike up a romance. But whether their love can survive the asn trials and Laura’s prognosis — remains to be seen.

Robert Zemeckis has taken big swings before, and not all of them have been successful. But he’s still trying something new with “Here,” a movie in which he reunites with “Forrest Gump” stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. The movie is based on a one-page comic book, and the plot is expanded to 100 years in one room, where the camera angle never changes once in all that time.

Hanks and Wright will age with CGI, and as the plot progresses, their ages will increase and we’ll see snapshots from their life together. The trailer makes some of these effects look a little suspect, but it’s possible that the final movie will be more convincing. It’s too early to tell how “Here” will be received, but it will be interesting to see if Zemeckis can pull it off.

My Dead Friend Zoe

There’s no trailer for My Dead Friend Zoe yet, but there is a cast that you may well be interested in. Soneka Martin-Green from Star Trek: Discovery will play the role of Merit, an Afghanistan war veteran who is haunted by a vision of Zoe (Natalie Morales), who was her best friend in the military.

According to the synopsis, this isn’t a horror movie, so the ghosts are probably just in Merit’s head. The movie synopsis says Merit will have to “come face-to-face with her grandfather, a Vietnam veteran, at the ancestral lake house.” It’s not quite clear yet which actor will play the role of the grandfather — Ed Harris or Morgan Freeman. But what is certain is that both of these actors will appear in the movie and play some of the key roles.

This year, Christmas will come earlier than usual in “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” an adaptation of Barbara Robinson’s children’s novel. Grace (Judy Greer) and her husband Bob Bradley (Pete Holmes) — are among the town’s residents who put on an annual Christmas pageant about the Nativity. This year’s performance features the Herdman children, Imogene (Beatrice Schneider), Ralph (Mason D. Anzu the Ghost Cat

Never underestimate the appeal of Japanese anime in movie theaters, especially a family film like “Anzu’s Ghost Cat,” which uses a retro style of two-dimensional animation with rotoscoped performances. It’s a very old-school animation technique. The story is about a girl named Karin who is abandoned by her father in rural Japan. Now only Karin’s grandfather takes care of her, until she meets Anzu, the titular ghost cat.

Karin doesn’t particularly like or trust Anzu, but they embark on a strange adventure together that will determine their fates and whether or not they stay together.
