Apple unveiled the iPhone 17 Pro and emphasized that this is the first time this model truly lives up to the Pro name. Unlike previous generations, where “Pro” was more about status and design, the new smartphone is geared toward professional use.

Materials and design

iPhone 17 Pro is stripped of titanium and received an aluminum body like the base version of iPhone 17. This decision is due to improved thermal performance. Now the smartphone is less prone to overheating, which is especially important when you’re working with video for long periods of time or playing intense games.

The role of a premium and “status” device is now played by the iPhone Air. It retains its titanium frame and comes in classic “professional” colors like gold, silver, white, and black. The iPhone 17 Pro comes in brighter colors like space orange, blue, and silver.

Performance and cooling

The move away from titanium has improved cooling efficiency. Previously, the use of titanium limited the capabilities of the chipset and the device would heat up faster. Now the iPhone 17 Pro is able to handle high loads without instantaneous tattling.

Apple is emphasizing that the smartphone is designed for video professionals. Longer video recording and new features, including Genlock support, are made possible precisely because of the redesigned body.

Screen without a difference

Another difference this generation is the display. The base iPhone 17 now has the same screen as the Pro version: a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR with ProMotion and Always-On Display support. Even the bezels have gotten equally thin. So the screen is no longer a factor in choosing a “professional” model.

Who needs an iPhone 17 Pro

The new smartphone is aimed at those who use the device as a work tool. For mobile videographers and gamers on the A19 Pro, it’s a model with a focus on practicality and performance rather than external glitz.
