Android 16 will be the last major update for these OnePlus smartphones

Google is gearing up to release a stable version of Android 16 as early as June, with Pixel smartphones being the first to receive the update. Following them, the new firmware will start arriving on devices from other brands, including OnePlus. For some OnePlus models, however, this update will be the last – Android 16 will end their lifecycle of major OS updates.

Android 16 will end support for a number of OnePlus devices

OnePlus has been actively involved in testing Android 16 and was one of the first to launch the beta back in April. Stable firmware for compatible devices is expected in the coming weeks. That said, Android 16 will be the last major update for the following models:

  • OnePlus 11R
  • OnePlus Nord 3
  • OnePlus Nord CE 4
  • OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite
  • OnePlus Pad

OnePlus has not yet released an official list of models getting Android 16. However, this list is based on the company’s current update policy and current support timelines.

The list is based on the company’s current update policy and current support timelines.

If your device is on the list, it will no longer receive new versions of Android after Android 16. This doesn’t mean an immediate end to support – but in the long run, accessing new features and improvements will require upgrading to a more recent model.

OnePlus Update Policy

OnePlus has improved its update policy in recent years. Flagship devices, starting with the OnePlus 12, now get four major versions of Android (previously three). The OnePlus Open, a foldable smartphone, is also eligible for four updates.

The company’s tablets typically get no more than three versions of Android, as do most models in the Nord lineup. While the standard for the Nord series has been two updates, with the release of the OnePlus Nord 3, the company has extended that to three years. And the budget-friendly OnePlus Nord 4, unveiled in the summer of 2024, unexpectedly got support for four generations of Android – a first for entry-level OnePlus devices.

The more affordable Nord CE and Nord N models are still limited to two versions of Android.

Competitors offer more

Despite the positive changes, OnePlus is still behind the leaders when it comes to software support. Google and Samsung offer up to seven years of Android updates for flagship devices, and in the case of Samsung’s newer models, up to six years even for mid-range devices.

At the same time, the OnePlus OnePlus OnePlus is still offering up to seven years of Android updates for its flagship devices.

OnePlus’ support period looks more modest against those numbers, especially for users who prefer to use a smartphone for three to four years or more.
